Care Instructions/Guinea Pig FAQ

Have you bowed down to your guinea pigs today?

What can I help you with today?

About this Blog

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! I (Diana) made this blog to help educate people about guinea pigs and to help anyone with any guinea pig related questions they might have. Since getting my piggies I've realized that very few people actually know how to properly care for a piggy! I adore animals and I want all animals to have the happiest and healthiest lives possible. I also use it to post adorable pictures and videos of my own piggies. Sometimes I'll reblog pictures of other piggies too! Now, my friend Taylor also helps me with this blog as well! I hope you enjoy!

About Diana

Hello, my name is Diana. I was born September 8th 1994. I live in New York. I have four guinea pigs. I love my fluffy baby girls so much. Besides guinea pigs, I also love working with computers (graphic design and coding), playing video games, reading, writing, learning, science, drawing, riding horses, cooking, and racing ATVs. I have an amazing boyfriend who is the best daddy to our guinea pigs.

How I (Diana) became a "Guinea Pig Mommy"

I've always wanted a guinea pig. A few years ago I met my best friend Nick. He has had over 20 piggies since he was young! He managed to help me convince my mom to get one. At the pet store I picked up two piggies and just couldn't decide who I wanted. I fell in love with both right away. My mother agreed to let me get both. Those piggies were River and Inara. My little sister asked for two also. After much debate my mother gave in. That's how Snow White and Annabella came to be. My sister had them for a few months and then could no longer take care of them. I happily took them in. Now here we are today. If you would like to talk or have any questions (guinea pig related or not) don't hesitate to send me a message! :)

Diana's Piggy Knowledge

Ever since I first got my piggies I spent countless hours getting to know more and more about guinea pigs. I've learned a lot over the years and I want to pass my wisdom on. I'm not an expert. I never took any classes on this or anything. All my knowledge is from first hand experience that I've picked up over the years and all the research I've done using credible sources. I do have a few friends who have gone to college to work with animals. They are experts and have degrees in fields relating to this. I run everything I hear/read by them before I post anything here.

About Diana's Piggies
written by the piggies

Hello. We're Inara Leeloo, River Daisy, Annabella Dolly, and Snow White Ily. We we born in June of 2011. Our Mommy, Diana, got us from the pet store called Petsmart in August of 2011. We live in America in a state called New York. We sleep in a big and beautiful C&C cage. We like to eat and sleep a lot. We also love to play. Our favorite toys are tunnels, cardboard boxes, fleece forests/corner caves, balls, paper bags, and fleece blankets.

Inara

I just realized I never actually wrote what happened with Inara. I made a video but I promised to write something to in case people didn’t watch the video.

Long story short, everyone who wrote to me was correct. It was spurs. The vet said since none of the other pigs had it that it probably just happened to Inara for no reason. Inara is fine. :) Spurs grow like toenails so the vet will just keep trimming them when we take her to get her nails clipped. Since there’s not much online about spurs I’ll write a post about them in a few minutes. I’ll also write a post about what happens at the vet when a piggy gets a checkup.

Thank you to everyone who kept me sane that day. :)

In Memory of Tiana

Tiana, you were are such a smart little hamster. You even came when we called your name. I loved the cute little quirks you had. Like how you’d only run on your wheel and not in it. I loved how when I came home from being away at school you would come running out of your little igloo.  My sister, your mommy, definitely loved you a lot. She loved how you’d walk all over her and never try to run away. She loved putting you in little boxes and tricking people into opening them. I’m pretty sure you liked it too because you always waited until the perfect moment to pop your head out. You also loved taking rides in her shirt or pocket. You sure did love boobies.

You were a happy hamster. You loved to run around your mom’s bed. You loved to climb the piggies like they were mountains. I’ll never forget watching you and the piggies play. It made me so happy that you guys were best friends. I know the piggies will miss their little buddy too.

We all know how much your mommy loves you. I think it was also obvious how much you love your mommy. You had no problem letting her pick you right up. You even fell asleep on her. That was how you spent your last night. Snuggled up happily with your mommy.

Have fun on the other side of the rainbow bridge. Say hello to all the others for us. We’ll see you all again one day. Rest in peace. We’ll miss you. We love you.

On the way in the door:

Mom: Hi! How was your day?
Me: Hello, human.
Guinea pigs: Wheek!
Me: OMG! My babies! Hello! I missed you! I love you so much, my little wheekers! Let’s snuggle!

I have 99 followers!

Wow! I just noticed! Thanks, guys! If I had a contest (for followers only) how many of you would enter? I’m not sure what the prizes would be but they’d be something for a guinea pig. I’ll let you guys help work out the details if enough people say they’ll enter!

Pet beds.

Can anyone recommend good quality but still fairly cheap pet beds that will clean up easy and be good for guinea pigs? I have four pigs, if that makes a difference. I want ones that will last a while and clean up nicely. Like, they’ll obviously pee/poop in/on them and I’m going to have to wash them. Do you think I’ll have to use a washing machine or could I wash them by hand?

I’m going through my phone and queuing a lot of pictures I took and never posted! :)

I thought you guys might want to know what my topic is for my research paper!

“Animal Rights (focusing on small animals) As I’ve mentioned here before I own a 4 guinea pigs and a dwarf hamster. At first, I assumed the pet stores’ care instructions were accurate and the best way to care for my pets. I soon found out that they were the total opposite. Caring for small animals the way pet store’s tell you to will greatly decrease your pet’s lifespan. Actually, most of what they tell you will actually KILL your pet. I’d like to write a paper on how to properly care for these animals and why the pet store’s instructions are wrong.”

When it is done and submitted I’ll post it here for you guys to read.

I really will use any possible chance to get word out about this!

I had the weirdest dream about River (my guinea pig).

So I was laying in my bed but everything was a lot bigger. The guinea pigs were 200lbs each (instead of 2-3lbs). So I guess since me and the pigs fit on my bed that means the bed was bigger. But maybe only slightly bigger because now that I think about it my boyfriend is almost 200lbs and we can both sleep in my bed just fine. Okay. So. Whatever. I had a bigger room, giant pigs, and therefore a ginormous piggy cage. So I was just laying in bed sleeping and River jumped out of the cage, onto the top of my dresser, and than onto my bed. She landed on top of  me. I was a little startled when I woke up. When I realized it was River I was trying to be nice and pet her and snuggle her. She was kissing me all over my face and just being adorable (like when I hold her in real life). But at the same time I was yelling for my mom to come help me because I was stuck under River because she was bigger than me. No matter how much I yelled my mom never came. I started getting scared that River might kill me. But I didn’t want to stop petting or cuddling her because I didn’t want to make her feel bed. And then I woke up. And I’m really confused now.

I need ideas!

Are there any questions any guinea pig parents or soon-to-be guinea pig parents want/need answers to? Anything anyone is wondering about? Any things you know about but think I should write about? I need ideas for things to write about.

P.S. I promise I’ll start posting pictures again soon!

Never take veggies from a piggy.

So, I gave my piggies their dinner (carrots, celery, collard greens, parsley, and green bell peppers). After placing their plates in the cage I decided that those carrots looked wonderful. I I reached in to grab one and they bit me. Okay. Okay. I’ll get my own carrot. <sarcasm> I totally understand that I rarely ever feed you so when you finally get food you can’t even spare one carrot. </sarcasm> Piggies are wonderful.
